malbec
Originally popular in Bordeaux, but now it is far more associated with Cahors - where it is known as 'cot' - and Argentina, who have taken it as their major red grape variety. It is often said to taste like a slightly more rustic version of merlot, but in Cahors whose wine is referred to as 'the black wine', it can develop a great depth and concentration. It is really in Argentina that malbec comes into its modern incarnation with cabernet-like wines of lush ripe fruit character and a spicy complexity which can be capable of ageing.
