gamay

French grape variety solely responsible for the wines of Beaujolais. It is an early budding, flowering and ripening variety that produces simple, light wines with juicy raspberryish flavours, crisp acidity and low tannins. For the production of the now infamous Beaujolais Nouveau it undergoes partial carbonic maceration to give a very light, gulpable style. The Cru Beaujolais tend to take it more seriously, keeping yields low and fermenting it in the traditional style to give wines with a little more weight that can develop a pinot noir style with a little maturity. It is also grown in the Loire Valley for lightweight reds and rosés.
