chenin blanc

Often known as pineau in its native region of the Loire Valley in France. This is one of the world's greatest versatile varieties capable of producing some of the longest lived sweet wines in the world, although in many New World regions - especially in South Africa - it is used for light, easy drinking every day wines.

The great sweet wines of the Loire are some of the very greatest, with its susceptibility to botrytis, late ripening and high acidity and distinctive character the best have astonishing honeyed concentration and richness.

At a more basic level it is a useful base for sparkling wines around the world and for blending with other varieties to make crisp refreshing wines - notably in California and South Africa where it is often known as steen.
