zinfandel
Zinfandel is the American incarnation of southern Italy's primitivo. Its history of importation to America is much disputed but it has been grown here since the early 1830s. It is a chameleon of a grape and has been made into almost every style of wine imaginable. At one extreme it is used for 'blush zinfandel' - a very off-dry pale pink, insipid rosé - and at the other it makes hugely fruity and powerful reds with up to 15.5 abv alcohol. However, when grown in lean conditions and handled carefully, it can make serious, concentrated wines with an optimum lifespan of up to eight years. It is peculiarly American and the styles produced reflect this far more that its Italian origins.
