viognier
In the 1990s viognier became one of the world's most fashionable white grape varieties, mainly because its most famous wine Condrieu is distinctive and associated with the trendy northern Rhône and it is relatively scarce. Since then there have been plantings over much of the south of France producing good varietal vin de pays wines in the Languedoc. It is a variety that needs a warm climate, and the resulting grapes are deep coloured and give a highly coloured wine with plenty of extract. Its most obvious characteristic is the powerful aromatic nose of roses and violets, apricots and blossom. It is a heady wine in its youth but usually lacks the acidity for lengthy maturation.
