verdicchio
The eponymous grape variety of two DOCs in central Italy - Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica, both in the Marches region. The wines tend to be relatively light with a bracing acidity and lemony nose followed by a bitter-almond finish. The wine had a kitsch image due to its amphora shaped bottle, but that has been abandoned in an attempt to gain a more serious, modern reputation. A good example of an interesting, indigenous grape making individual wines.
