trebbiano
Also known as ugni blanc in France, it is by far the most planted variety in Italy making wines that are light, crisp and normally pretty uninspiring. It is a very prolific variety and usually allowed to have a high yield. It is also cited as a blending variety in more DOC regulations than any other variety including Chianti, although most producers now prefer to ignore it. It does however have an important role in the production of Vin Santo with malvasia.
As ugni blanc in France its most comon use is for the base wine for Cognac but otherwise has little role in modern winemaking and its influence is in decline as consumers seek more sophisticated flavours.
