touriga nacional
The finest and most revered of the Port varieties and increasingly used for fine, concentrated table wines, it is principally grown in the Douro Valley in Portugal as well as Dão. Its most obvious role is in Port when it adds weight, concentration, power and firm, grippy tannins and is usually blended with touriga francesca to add perfume and fruit character. In Dão it normally makes up at least 20% of the blend where it is used as a base for its structural capabilities.
