This is a fashionable Rhône grape variety, which when blended with marsanne is one of only two vine varieties allowed in Hermitage blanc or St-Joseph blanc. It is by far the lesser planted variety due to its irregular yields and proneness to powdery mildew. Its strengths are an elusive aroma akin to a slightly odd herb tea and a bracing acidity that allows for graceful ageing. It is also one of the four white varieties allowed in Châteauneuf du Pape, although little planted beyond such other regions as Savoie and Provence.
