primitivo
Principally grown in Apulia in southern Italy, this dark skinned variety was recently discovered to be genetically identical to Zinfandel of California but clones of each variety show some variation. For a long time it was thought to be indigenous to Italy, but research shows that both primitivo and zinfandel originate in Croatia. It makes wines that are rustic, deeply-colored, high in alcohol and highly extracted, with jammy, brambly black fruit flavours offset by aromas of rose petals and chocolate. Of its two D.O.C. designations, Primitivo di Gioia is produced as a dry wine, while Primitivo di Manduria may also be produced as a sweet or fortified wine.
