pinot gris
Widely spread and increasingly fashionable, pinot gris produces soft, perfumed, spicy wines with plenty of substance and colour. It is the best known mutation of pinot noir, which accounts for its dusky skin and deep colour. It is much grown in Alsace where it is traditionally called Tokay and is one of Alsace's noble triumvirate with riesling and gewurztraminer, producing super-rich wines of spicy intensity. In Italy it goes under the name of pinot grigio where it makes much lighter styles with relatively low aroma and high acidity. In Germany it takes the name of grauburgunder or sometimes rulander. It is making inroads in New Zealand where plantings are on the increase and the style is dry and perfumed.
