pinot blanc

Also known as weissburgunder and pinot bianco, this French variety was first observed as a mutation of pinot gris, which in itself is a lighter berried version of pinot noir. For many years there was no distinction made between pinot blanc and chardonnay as there are many physical similarities. Pinot blanc makes light, dry wines notable for their piercing aroma. It is mainly grown in Alsace, Italy, Germany and Austria with some plantings in California. Although now differentiated from chardonnay, it has never gained a reputation for quality that chardonnay has.
