petit verdot
One of Bordeaux's classic grape varieties, admittedly the least known and planted one. It is very much the fourth variety of Bordeaux, but is enjoying a small revival in some quality-conscious vineyards. It shares many similarities with cabernet sauvignon, including thick skins and the capacity to produce concentrated, tannic wines of great extract. In ripe vintages it can make spicy, rich age-worthy wines and is a valuable contributor to the Bordeaux blend, albeit in small quanitities as a little goes a very long way. There are some plantings in California and a smattering in Chile.
