nebbiolo

One of the great noble black grape varieties that is responsible for some of the finest and longest-lived wines in Italy. It is native to Piedmont in the north west where it produces such greats as Barolo and Barbaresco, which inspire imitators all over the world. It is a late ripener that produces wines of fantastic aromatic complexity and elegance. They have substantial, exceedingly dry tannins, high acidity and a distinctive orange colour, and are often said to smell of tar and roses. Beyond Piedmont, nebbiolo hasn't really fulfilled its potential and it doesn't seem to get the ethereal complexity and earthy delicacy that makes it such an individual wine.
