marsanne
Originating in the northern Rhône, it is traditionally partnered with roussanne in such appellations as Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. It has a tendency to low acidity but this has recently been mitigated by modern winemaking methods which has led to its increased spread. In the south of France it has gained a reputation as a full bodied characterful varietal as well as being a useful blending partner to viognier and roussanne. It is also planted in California and particularly in Victoria, Australia where it produces big heavy wines, best for earlier drinking.
