This is a rising star of the grape firmament. Increasingly trendy, it is tipped to be the next big thing in the world of wine drinking. It is the most widely grown grape variety in Austria, and is also found throughout central Europe. It is a hardy variety but needs the warmth of a continental climate to achieve full ripeness. It produces wines of both perfume and substance and is almost Alsatian in style. Typically it is dry, racy and peppery with a hint of spice and currant leaves. At its best it can be truly great.
