gewurztraminer

A truly great aromatic variety that is responsible for pungent, full-bodied wines. It is deeply coloured, often with a pinkish tinge, with great weight, powerful aroma of lychees and roses and wonderful richness. Its historic home is Alsace in France where it can be an extremely serious wine from dry in style to concentrated and sweet in its 'vendange tardive' incarnation.

More recently it has been experimented with in the New World with varying degrees of success. It is difficult in a warm climate to gain sufficient acidity to hold it together. However there have been some good examples coming out of Gisborne and Central Otago in New Zealand and Oregon and Washington states in the USA.
