furmint

A little known but very important grape variety, mostly found in central Europe. This is one of the major grapes behind the ancient and famous sweet wine Tokaji from the Tokaj-Hegyalja region of eastern Hungary. Here it is infected with botrytis to produce intensely sweet wines of immense longevity. Its other traditional stronghold is the Burgenland region of Austria where once again with botrytis it produces the rich, sweet Ausbruch wines. It is also used for light, dry aromatic wines in Hungary and Austria, Slovakia and Romania. A sturdy grape variety with high natural acidity, it can produce wines of up to 14% alcohol with a fiery character.
