dolcetto
This is an early ripening, low-acid variety almost exclusively cultivated in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. The wines are generally low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds and licorice. Most Dolcettos should be drunk within a year or two of the vintage, but the wines from the best producers in Alba can last for 5 years and sometimes longer. Dolcetto Nuovo is the local equivalent of Beaujolais Nouveau and can be a wonderfully refreshing, juicy wine for immediate consumption.
