carignan

Also known as cariñena in Spain and carignano in Italy. It is a late ripening variety that is generally undistinguished except in the sheer quantity it has been planted at the expense of more interesting varieties in Europe. It produces wines that are high in colour, acidity, tannins and bitterness which gives it a useful role as a blend variety, as is often seen in Languedoc and Roussillon. However it lacks the finesse and elegance that would make maturation worthwhile. There are little notable plantings of carignan in the New World although there are some pockets in California.
