This is an important dark-skinned Spanish grape variety which produces very dark wines and so has an important role in blending, although it is rarely seen outside Spain. The only DO wine that permits its use is Utiel-Requena where it usually partners tempranillo. It provides good colour and fruity, cherryish, black berry flavours as well as a firm backbone of acidity.
