barbera
A productive and versatile grape variety challenged only by sangiovese as the most planted red variety in Italy. Piedmont is generally agreed to be the birthplace of barbera, although historically it has long been grown in Lombardy. It is one of the great grapes of northern Italy, second only to nebbiolo. Its great characteristics are a deep colour and a high level of natural acidity which allow it to be grown in warmer climates around the world. It has seen notable success in California, Argentina and some areas of Victoria, Australia where it still retains an individual "rustico" characteristic of herbal, hedgerow flavours.
